A PROJECT ABOUT LIVING
IN UNCHARTED TERRITORY.
(COMING SOON!)

Fandom has been around as long as people have been telling stories and making things, but growing up and building a life in fandom still feels new and tenuous. Schools don't offer fandom career counseling.

There's a certain whiplash involved when you find yourself in a fandom job, or flying across the country to attend fan conferences, or working on a passion project that finds an audience. The unconventional always feels kind of accidental, and there's little precedent to fall back on.

This project is an answer to that - a series of interviews, essays, and conversations that will hopefully add up to both stuff-I-wish-I-had-heard and stuff-I-still-need-to-hear.

Navigating Fandom sets out to:

  • document lives lived in and shaped by fandom.
  • explore the unique experiences and dynamics we encounter in (and as a result of) fandom, establishing resources and sparking discussion.
  • empower fans and fan communities.
